Hello All,
This has been a big weekend for the gardens. Snakebite and David, from Story City IA (near DesMoines)Came down to deliver the plants they have propagated for the gardens. I met them partway, at the farm of MMF participant, Rod Harrington, near St.Joe. They have grown cardinal Lobelia, the blue Lobelia syphilitica, Liatris, Rudbeckia, Jewels of Opar, Cassia, Oxalis, Jack-in-the-Pulpit, and others i cannot recall at the moment. Some of these will be planted in the first bed to be dedicated in the Prairie propagation area by the lagoons.Clint has had the tractor setting posts and we have stretched some of the fencing sections. The gates are painted and will be mounted as soon as the posts "settle." I finally moved the pair of rowans that have been struggling at the entry to the statue of Flora. For several reasons, they were not thriving where they were. The two redbud seedlings and the two seedling junipers in that area need to STAY there. Please DON't weed them out, anyone. As they grow, we can pleach them in place. Eventually, the junipers will form a very tall arch over that entry. That had been Tom the Gardener's intention for the rowans, which just never quite came to fruition. They are now planted below their previous location, on either side of the entry to the bench area. As time comes to introduce some of the plants provided by Snakebite and David, we will be noticing more actual Flora in Flora's. I moved a large number of the ornamental oregano from the pentacle in Flora's (where the urn of ashes is located) over to:puter: Fauna's. With Chuck taking over there, we can focus on providing ANY magical herbs or culinary herbs we can think of. It would be perfectly fine for these functions of Fauna's to bleed over into Heretic Garden. I would love to see Festival feasts provided in part from the gardens. Also, some festivals and rituals have found cut flowers from the gardens. These can be more plentiful with our efforts. With the pentacle circle "unveiled" it is ready to have the stonework redone and the central cairn made more perfect. Clint has ordered two large loads of "flora's gravel." We can renew that which washed out and add it to paths and beds that are new since we ran out of the previous supply. This gravel should be a particularly useful amendment in Fauna's, where certain herbs will do much better with "sharp drainage." Some flower seeds provided by Linn England were direct seeded in front of the "maiden" statue. Also some of them are below the low walls on either side of the bench. Check with me about the location of the seedlings if you are ever weeding in these areas. Also, anyone interested in having a "Muck Party" sometime this summer let me know. I hope to get some trailer loads of Onessa muck into the gardens this year. We experimented with this last season. The beds so amended were IMMEASURABLY improved. Okay, excessive rambling.
Blessings,
Prairie
