Earth Day 2009
For a fifth year, Camp Gaea will celebrate Earth Day formally on the weekend of April 17, 18 and 19. Of course, every day is Earth Day at the camp. But we would be remiss not to join with so many others who pause to consider the role of Nature in our lives each spring. Pausing may not be the image for many Earth Day festivities. Organizations vie for attention. It seems every urban park is filled with good-time Charlies expressing their fair-weather friendship with the Mother.
And that’s okay. Gaea’s celebration is centered around community. The Leaky Cauldron Clan will be preparing Breakfast on Sunday morning. The proceeds, as usual, will be donated to the camp. The Friday and Saturday evening meals will be our traditional potluck suppers. The camp will provide Chili on Friday and Quesadillas on Saturday.
The program in not yet set in stone. But presentations on Gaea’s sewage treatment system and it’s place in the ecosystem will be given. Hikes and garden tours are planned. Earth-friendly merchants are in place. Cat will demonstrate how to reuse many mundane disposables to make firestarters. A children’s tent, with activities is also underway. If the program, now being assembled on the Earth Day page of the www.campgaea .org website, does not contain some item you desire, YOU may be the missing element. Please contact us before the event and express your interest and your desires. You may be able to help us in realizing them.
Pre-registration is also available on the website. Our past experience has been that items such as t-shirts, eco shopping bags with logos and meal plans can run out. Pre-registration allows you to secure any such items you may want. Cabins are also known to go fast as the date nears. Best make reservations soon. The Sonic Sidhe Tribe of musicians will perform Saturday night, followed by drumming and dancing. Those who attend Gaea’s many fire circles will not want to miss this special event.
Earth day can begin sooner if you are itching for a little Nature. The spring burns allow us to indulge an interest in ecological management and some mild forms of pyromania at the same time. The land is always calling. Hikes anywhere on the trails immerse you in natural phenomena. Please join us for those events as well. But when we pause to recognize what is happening around us each spring and rededicate ourselves to improvement and greater understanding, the staff and members of Earth Rising very much hope you will join us on Earth Day.
