| What does Gaea mean? |
| Gaea is the ancient Greek name for Mother Earth, or Earth Mother. She is the wife of Chaos and joined with him to produce all of known reality. They are the parents, not just of the Titans, but of the Gods as well. |
| Who is Earth Rising, Inc.? |
| Earth Rising Inc., is a tax-exempt, not-for-profit organization that owns and operates the Camp Gaea Retreat Center. There is a board of directors that meets on a monthly basis. The date, time and location of the next board meeting is posted on the homepage. |
| Who is welcome at Camp Gaea Retreat Center? |
| Camp Gaea Retreat Center is private property and permission to be on the property is governed by the Earth Rising, Inc. Board of Directors and implemented by Caretakers of the property who normally live on-site. Under normal circumstances anyone who abides by the Rules is welcome on the property, except during scheduled exclusive events when the entire facility has been reserved by a private organization. Permission to be on the property can be rescinded due to flagrant violation of the rules or by engaging in blatant illegal activity. This is for the protection of the property, the facilities, the organization and our guests. |
| How do I find out when the camp is exclusively booked? |
| On the top navigation bar you can click the link to the Calendar. Or you may view the Upcoming Events page which lists the scheduled dates of Exclusive, Non-Exclusive and other events at the camp. Please consult the calendar or upcoming events page before travelling out to the camp so that you can avoid coming out when you can't use the facilities. |
| How does Work Exchange really work? |
Work exchange is operated and overseen by the camp Caretakers who live on-site.
Work exchange must be applied for with and pre-approved by the Caretakers. To do this, when you arrive at camp, register at Phoenix Hall and then go to the caretaker's cabin to get a work assignment.
For every hour of approved work that is completed, an individual earns one "Gaea Buck" which can be used to pay for $5 of Rental or Reservation fees.
The Work Exchange program at Gaea is provided for two main reasons. The first is to help people who do not have the immediately available funds to pay the fees to use the camp facilities. The second reason is to help the camp by encouraging regular, supervised work on the camp grounds and facilities. |
| Is Gaea a Singles Spot, Swingers Hangout or Pickup Place? |
| No, no, and no. If this is what you are after when you come out to Gaea then you will probably be unhappy with us and we may end up very unhappy with you. Yes, the people at Gaea tend to be more open and welcoming than unfriendly and insular, but "cruising for a pick-up" is behavior that is often unwelcome and frequently discouraged. There are many facets to the jewel that is Gaea which each of us finds our own way to enjoy, and it is true that many people have found someone for themselves at Gaea, but probably fewer relationships have been found at Gaea than at the office coffee pot or corner bar. Many people bring their families to Gaea to enjoy the natural setting and tolerant environment, and they might strongly object to strangers poking and sniffing them like shoppers checking cantaloupe at the grocery store. Some people go to Gaea to get away from "other people", want solitude, and should be allowed to have it. For many people Gaea is a religious center and they may resent the unwelcomed intrusion of people pushing other agendas. Gaea does welcome singles and people of all cultural and social beliefs, and we host many events and activities which do allow people to meet other people and engage in enjoyable recreational activities, but we do not exist to be a "meet market". |
| Are we permitted to bring our own boats to Gaea? |
| Use of gas motor powered boats is prohibited on the lake. All other boats are permitted. |
| Are we prohibited from bringing our own swimming pools to Gaea? |
| Due to the erosion and damage to the land that swimming pools have cause; swimming pools are prohibited at Gaea without prior approval from Earth Rising, Inc. |
| Is Camp Gaea a Nudist Camp? |
NO, Camp Gaea is designed as a recreational retreat center for the purpose of cultural and spiritual education. As such, the camp promotes tolerance, acceptance and respect between groups and individuals. We neither promote nor discourage nudity as it is a personal and spiritual choice.
However, clothing is required in many places, such as in public buildings, on or along the main access roads, and open areas adjacent to property fence lines. As such, if you are walking and enjoying Gaea, you should have suitable clothing to cover when in areas where required as well as provide some clothing or material to sit on. |
